The Importance of Vitamin C

Vitamin C, also known as ascorbic acid, ⁣has long been an essential element to good health, it plays a vital role in our immunity and helps prevent disease and fight illness.

Vitamin C is a water soluble vitamin needed for normal growth and development. Since it is not produced by our bodies, we must consume it. Leftover amounts are expelled through the body via urine.

Although the body keeps a small reserve of these vitamins, they have to be taken regularly to prevent a shortage in the body.⁣⁣

Vitamin C is needed for growth and repair of tissues in all parts of your body. Our bodies use Vitamin C to:⁣⁣

1. Form an important protein used to make skin, tendons, ligaments, and blood vessels⁣⁣.⁣

2. Heal wounds and form scar tissue⁣, repair and maintain cartilage, bones, and teeth⁣⁣.⁣

3. Aid in the absorption of iron (especially important if one is anemic)⁣⁣.

4. Block free radical damage: Vitamin C is one of many antioxidants.

However, oranges aren’t the only source of this important nutrient. Broccoli, brussel sprouts and mangos rank high on the ladder too. Below is a quick reference to some fruits and vegetables with high levels of vitamin C.

So, the next time you're shopping the perimeter at the supermarket, make sure to include these superstar fruits and veggies in your cart.
